We've heard a lot about artificial intelligence. But what exactly is GPT-3 all about? What can it actually do? And should humans be afraid of GPT-3 now? You can find the answers in this blog article.
GPT-3 was "born" in 2020! GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3) is a language model developed by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research lab in San Francisco. The deep learning model with 175 billion parameters is capable of producing human-like text and has been trained on large text datasets with hundreds of billions of words. Since the launch of GPT-3 in 2020, it has generated an average of 4.5 million words per day and is used by more than 300 apps.
Natural language processing includes the generation of text in human language as one of its main components. However, for machines that do not really know the complexities and subtleties of language, it is a challenge to generate human-understandable content. With the help of texts/articles/blogs from the Internet, GPT-3 was trained to generate realistic texts.
GPT-3 has been used to create articles, poems, stories, news reports and dialogs, requiring only a small amount of input text to produce large amounts of high quality text.
GPT-3 is also used for automated conversational tasks by responding to any text a person enters into the computer with a new piece of text appropriate to the context. GPT-3 can create any text with a text structure, not just texts in human language. It can also automatically generate text summaries and even programming code.
At its core, GPT-3 is a transformer model. Transformer models are sequence-to-sequence models for deep learning that can generate a text sequence from an input sequence. These models are designed for text generation tasks such as question answering, text summarization and machine translation. The following figure shows how a GPT-3 iteratively generates a translation into Spanish, French and Japanese from an English input sequence.
Whenever a large amount of text needs to be generated by a machine based on a small amount of text input, GPT-3 provides a good solution. There are many situations where it is not practical or efficient to have a human on site to generate the text output or where automated text generation that appears human is required. For example, customer service centers can use GPT-3 to answer customer questions or support chatbots; sales teams can use it to engage with prospects; and marketing teams can use GPT-3 to write copy.
As in any industry, machine learning and AI technology applications are likely to replace low-skilled labor. This mainly includes repetitive, everyday tasks for which the technology was developed. However, GPT-3 cannot yet fully replace an entire workforce. It is still advisable to take a look at the texts generated by GPT-3 before they are output.
